Hon. Abdirashiid Hassan Matan

Status: Current
Role: Governor
Sector: Leadership
Location: Awdal region

Summary: Abdirashid Hassan Mataan is a prominent Somaliland technocrat and politician, currently serving as the Governor of the Awdal region. Before his transition into regional governance, he built a distinguished professional reputation through a long-term career as an employee of the World Bank. This background in international development and finance provided him with a unique administrative lens, which he first brought to the political stage as the Vice Presidential candidate for the UCID party during the 2017 elections. He eventually aligned with the Waddani party, leading to his high-stakes appointment by President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi "Irro" in late 2025. Governor Mataan is most widely recognized for his decisive leadership during the December 2025 Borama crisis, a violent period of unrest that resulted in nearly 20 deaths. He is credited with "saving" the region from further escalation by shifting away from a purely military response toward a strategy of transparency and mediation. By publicly acknowledging the casualties, negotiating directly with local elders to facilitate a security pullback, and coordinating medical evacuations for the wounded to Hargeisa and Addis Ababa, he stabilized the region and established himself as a rare bridge between international technical expertise and sensitive local diplomacy.
